Be One of our Photographers

It's natural for many people to be a little tense or nervous in front of the camera.  It's like public speaking or being on stage.  There is one big difference.  You don't have to do anything.  Everything most people worry about is the photographer's job.

Relax and concentrate on what the photographer can't do, clothing, hairstyles and maybe something that is special for your family.

Clothing is a matter of personal preference.  Having everybody in perfectly matching clothing is nice but not necessary.  It is more important that everybody be comfortable.  Maybe that suit or dress that was last worn two years ago isn't the best choice.

There are a few things to keep in mind.  We won't tell you to avoid dark clothing, but dark colors will lose shadow detail.  With classic lighting the shadows will still be there, but they will be subtle.  Look at some of the pictures on this website.  Dark or even black clothing on a black background can be a nice effect if that's what YOU like.

Solid colors are less distracting than patterns but that doesn't mean you should never wear anything but pastels.  think about your body type and the type of poses you would like us to do.

You don't have to avoid sleeveless or short sleeved tops, but do you want your arms or shoulders to show?

White shirts and denim can be a nice effect that will look classic in fifty years.  If Dad has to rent or buy a tux that probably wouldn't be best, but if he has one that he likes in the closet, why not?  It might not work with the family portrait but maybe a pose with Mom or a special father and son or daughter pose.

Everyone is different.  We photographed a couple in their hunting clothes, complete with shotguns, labrador and pheasants.

If you understand the reasons for the old rules you can decide whether or not to follow them.
Think about how your clothing will look in a picture.  Use your imagination.

If you still have questions call us.  We will be happy to help.

If you have any questions or concerns please call us.  We are happy to answer your questions if you are planning to have your family photographed when we photograph your child's preschool or one of our Family Portrait Events.
